IRCAM, the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music directed by Frank Madlener, is one of the world’s largest public research centers dedicated to both musical expression and scientific research. This unique location where artistic sensibilities collide with scientific and technological innovation brings together over 160 collaborators. Founded by Pierre Boulez, IRCAM is associated with the Centre Pompidou, under the tutelage of the French Ministry of Culture. The mixed STMS research lab (Sciences and Technologies for Music and Sound), housed by IRCAM, also benefits from the support of the CNRS and Sorbonne University.
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Computer Music Research (ICCMR) develops research combining music, science and technology. The research expertise ranges from musicology and composition, to biomedical applications of music and development of new technologies for musical creativity. The centre is affiliated to the School of Humanities and Performing Arts, and has connections with the Faculty of Health: Medicine, Dentistry and Human Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Centre for Health Technology.

Evolutionary Computation is a leading journal in its field. Journal of Mathematics and Music aims to advance the use of mathematical modelling and computation in music theory. The Journal focuses on mathematical approaches to musical structures and processes, including mathematical investigations into music-theoretic or compositional issues as well as mathematically motivated analyses of musical works or performances. In consideration of the deep unsolved ontological and epistemological questions concerning knowledge about music, the Journal is open to a broad array of methodologies and topics, particularly those outside of established research fields such as acoustics, sound engineering, auditory perception, linguistics etc.
The use of Artificial Intelligence for the development of artistic systems is a recent, exciting and significant area of research. There is a growing interest in the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques (such as Artificial Neural Network, Evolutionary Computation, Swarm, Cellular Automata, Alife) in fields such as: visual art and music generation, analysis, and interpretation; sound synthesis; architecture; video; poetry; design; and other creative tasks. The main goal of EvoMUSART is to bring together researchers who are using Artificial Intelligence techniques for artistic tasks, providing the opportunity to promote, present and discuss ongoing work in the area.
